5 Tips to Tackle Your Night Shift

Owning the Night Shift

Maria S. RN, knows a thing or two about thriving on a night shift. Sure, it starts with the proper sleep foundation, but with a few more tricks stashed in your scrub sleeve, you'll be able to knock out every shift that week without breaking a sweat.

1. Catch those ZZZs. (if you saw this tip in our email this week, skip to tip #2!)

'The night before your first shift, try to stay up as long as you can. When you get off work, plan to get to sleep as soon as possible and try your best to stick with a time to get up. I usually sleep between the hours of 8am-2pm.'

2. Water, water everywhere

'The first thing I do before getting out of bed is chug water. Staying hydrated helps minimize the 'nightshift hangover'. It's also a great way to start your day hydrated-sometimes it is so hard to drink water at work!'

3. Working it out

'It can be hard to find energy or motivation to get a good workout in, but I feel that it actually gets me energized before my shift. Even if you just get a quick walk in, your body will thank you!'

4. You are what you eat

'What you eat on night shift is very important. I've found that the better you eat, the better you feel throughout the night. Minimize your intake of junk foods and it'll give you more energy throughout your shift. I highly suggest bringing light snacks to work as well.'

5. Scrubs with style

'The scrubs you wear matter! And there's nothing that makes a shift longer than scrubs that don't fit or keep you comfortable. I also always wear compression socks to work, comfy shoes, and bring a jacket of some kind because hospitals are FREEZING at night! I also highly recommend having enough scrubs to cover your entire stretch (4 shifts, 4 sets of scrubs) there's honestly nothing worse than trying to do laundry half way through a stretch!'
