Best CyberGhost VPN Promo Code · CyberGhost VPN Review and Ratings

CyberGhost VPN is another commercial VPN provider that offers both free and paid service. The free Romania-based service is notable in that it has no hard data allocation limit and no deliberate limitation on download speed. It sounds great, but the reality is not so rosy. CyberGhost limits the free service to servers in 15 countries compared to 31 for the paid service. Countries where there are no free servers are Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Additionally, during peak hours, users may have to queue to access free servers and are disconnected after three hours or when they exceed certain data transfer limits. Once disconnected, you will have to queue for a server again.

Those drawbacks aside, it's a great choice for those who don't want to be limited by the tiny monthly data allowances imposed by most free VPN services and can live with the downside of being disconnected every three hours. . It's been around for almost 10 years, building on the massive VPN it is today. And that brings a lot of value. Your account allows you to download the VPN on seven devices. It's one more device than the one you get from one of our favorite VPNs, NordVPN. Speaking of value, you'll also get a 45-day money-back guarantee with CyberGhost. That's 15 days more than the North guarantee. CyberGhost boasts impressive compatibility with macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, Firefox, fireTV, and Android TV. You can even configure it on your router. A VPN can provide all kinds of benefits, not least of which is protecting your internet activity from those who might use it for less than tasty purposes. CyberGhost VPN is a user-friendly way to boost your internet security and protect your traffic. Like most VPNs we've tried CyberGhost is pretty easy to use. Once you've downloaded and started it, you can immediately connect to an optimal server (aka the one with the least lag, given your location). After a few seconds, you are connected and secure. Even on public Wi-Fi, you can have confidence in your data. And CyberGhost does n't bother when it comes to servers. It hosts more than 6,300 servers in 90 countries. For comparison, NordVPN had, at the time of writing this report, approximately 5,450 servers in 59 countries. CyberGhost really is the king when it comes to options.

CyberGhos t is a privacy giant based in Romania and Germany that provides full VPN services to over 10 million users.

coupon

CyberGhost VPN has over 7,100 servers in more than 89 countries, a quantum leap since our last review, when there were 'only' 4,800 servers in 58 countries. Torrents are allowed on many, but not all, servers, and the company offers custom clients for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and more.

Besides the regular VPN functionality, CyberGhost includes a host of bundled extras. It can block malicious websites, ads, and trackers. Automated HTTPS redirection ensures that the most secure connection possible is made with each website, and optional data compression can reduce bandwidth, which can save money on mobile.

CyberGhost VPN supports connecting up to seven devices simultaneously. It's a bit better than most (the industry standard is five), but keep in mind that these devices need to be specific. Connect from a phone, game console, or smart TV, just once, and it's one of your sold out locations. If you run out of locations later, you can sign out of individual devices, but if that happens, it quickly gets boring,

Elsewhere, a web-based knowledge base is available if needed, while chat and email support is on hand to help with particularly tricky issues.

We'd love to tell you about the many new features CyberGhost is offering now, but other than the big increase in server numbers and locations, there's not much to get excited about - and so it still doesn't quite fit the bill. made to our favorite ExpressVPN.

Apps no longer support L2TP, for example - your choice is IKEv2 and OpenVPN. While browsing the release notes, we also noticed that the iOS app now has a dark mode and that a themed sticker pack is available on Halloween. Well, uh, thank you. We think.

Editor's Note: The following immediately is an overview of the latest changes and additions since this review was last updated.

  • The Linux application has been updated with the main feature being WireGuard support. (April 2020)
  • The service now has more than 6,440 servers and 112 locations in 90 countries. (May 2020)

Plans and prices

Signing up for the CyberGhost VPN monthly account costs $ 12.99 per month, at the high end of the industry standard of $ 10 to $ 13.

The price drops sharply as you extend your subscription, however, with an annual plan that costs the equivalent of $ 5.99 per month, dropping to $ 3.69 over two years.

The three-year plan is now $ 2.75 per month, down from $ 2.50 in our last review. It's even better than most - NordVPN's three-year plan is $ 3.49, for example - but if price is your priority, you might prefer Surfshark's two-year plan to just $ 1.00. $ 99 per month.

Choose a CyberGhost deal and you can pay with Bitcoin, as well as PayPal and credit card.

Free trials are available, although they are more complicated to understand than usual.

coupons

While CyberGhost's free trial is useful, waiting in a long queue to test the service is less than ideal (Image credit: CyberGhost)

Download and create an account through Windows, for example, and you'll only have 24 hours to try the service. Not only is it very short, but you also don't have access to the full service. The client doesn't allow some of the dedicated streaming connections to be used, for example, and every time you log in you're notified that all 'free slots' are exhausted, and you have to wait a minute or two. It also only supports one device.

You can get more trial time by signing up for the iOS app, which gives you seven days. But first you need to register with the app. If you create your account through Windows and then sign in to your iOS app using the same account, its trial will also expire after 24 hours.

Install the Android app, however, and you don't need to create or log into a CyberGhost account, which means you'll get your full 7-day trial no matter what.

Confusing? Yes. The best approach is probably to Android App, if you can, to get a feel for how CyberGhost is performing and see if you can access Netflix and other blocked sites. If you like what you see, pick a day when you have nothing else to do and spend it testing the desktop client extensively.

We would prefer a simpler scheme of things - would it really be that hard to have seven days free, no matter what your platform? - but at least CyberGhost gives you a chance to try before you buy. And if you sign up and find the service isn't working for you, there's good news - the company has a long 45-day money-back guarantee, one of the most generous offers out there. .

Logging and confidentiality

Like many VPNs, CyberGhost's website proudly has a 'Strict No Logs Policy' on its front page.

Unlike some VPNs, the service's privacy policy does a good job of safeguarding, with very specific statements: "When using CyberGhost VPN, we have no idea about your traffic data such as browsing history. , traffic destination, data content and search preferences that are NOT monitored, recorded, recorded or stored by us.

"Additionally, when we use CyberGhost VPN, we do NOT store connection logs, which means we do not have any logs related to your IP address, connection timestamp, or session duration. . "

For customers who are unsure of the technical details, the policy continues to state the implications.

"At no point do we know which user has ever accessed a particular website or service."

"We do NOT know which user was logged into our CyberGhost VPN service at any given time or which CyberGhost VPN server IP address they used."

"We do NOT know the full set of original IP addresses of a user's computer."

If you need more, a 'Is CyberGhost connecting? No!' the supporting document adds a little extra detail.

The company backs this up to some extent with a transparency report where it lists the DMCA, police and other requests it receives, and the amount of data it transmits. (Hint: none.)

While welcome, the reality is that these are just words on a website, and there is no way for an individual user to know how the service actually works. Some VPN providers (NordVPN, VyprVPN) solve this problem by having independent audits run on their systems, and we hope CyberGhost and the rest of the industry will do the same soon.

In the meantime, we can at least do our own basic privacy checks, using sites like IPLeak.net and DNS Leak Test to check for DNS and other privacy leaks.

None of the tests found a problem, and one that we spotted in the last review - connecting the UK to New York and assigning a US IP address, but a UK DNS address - has been corrected. Everywhere we connected we have now received a DNS IP address from that country, as we expected.

Performance

Measuring VPN performance is difficult as there are so many factors involved, but we have tried to get a feel for CyberGhost speeds by testing local performance in UK and US with benchmark websites including SpeedTest and TestMy.net.

Our nearest UK servers provided very acceptable speeds, averaging around 65-70 Mbps on our broadband line at 75 Mbps.

OpenVPN's additional encryption inevitably reduced performance, but CyberGhost has still only reduced our speeds by about 6-7%, minimal overhead.

We tested in the US on a 600 Mbps connection, but the speeds were slower than in the UK at 30-75 Mbps.

These tests, however, took place at the end of March 2020, when many people were working from home to reduce their risk of coronavirus. It is highly likely that our results were affected by the increase in internet traffic, although there is no way to say for sure, or know how much of a factor this was.

The best we can say is that CyberGhost handled below average speeds, even by coronavirus-era standards (other VPNs reviewed recently did better). But due to the exceptional circumstances, we are not going to mark the company for this.

Netflix

Unblocking Netflix with a VPN and similar sites can be a challenge, even with the best services. This is because most vendors won't tell you which servers are working and which are not, forcing you to work on all the servers in the target country until you finally get lucky.

CyberGhost's apps seem to make your life easier by highlighting locations that support the services you need. When we chose the Streaming filter in our Windows client, for example, we saw recommended locations for US Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney +, YouTube TV and more, as well as other specialty servers for Canada, the France, Germany, Finland, Poland, Brazil and more.

The UK servers worked for us, bypassing BBC VPN detection and allowing us to stream iPlayer content without difficulty.

Viewing Amazon Prime in the US can be tricky, but CyberGhost got us in and we were able to stream US content from the UK without any issues.

Access to Disney + was our only problem. We connected to the CyberGhost recommended streaming location, but found that disneyplus.com was generally unresponsive, and our best result was absolute was a 503 error (the web server talks about 'sorry, you can't have this content at the moment').

Disney Plus had just launched in Europe at the time of the review, so it's possible the server was overwhelmed, especially with a potentially huge audience at home, thanks to various coronavirus-related lockdowns.

Whatever the cause, as we couldn't see if Disney Plus detected our CyberGhost connection, we're not going to consider this issue to be a black mark for the service.

Torrents

While some VPNs hide their torrent status, CyberGhost is rather more straightforward. Just run the Windows client, for example, and you'll find one of its server listings called 'For Torrenting'.

There are also some useful tweaks buried in Settings, including the ability to automatically connect your favorite CyberGhost connection every time you launch your torrent client (more on that later).

Bonus features include a malicious URL filter, enabled by default, which could help you avoid a lot of trouble.

If you ignore the "For torrent" VPN list and connect to a VPN location manually, there is a risk of a problem. CyberGhost explains that "we have to block P2P protocols on certain servers, either for strategic reasons (it is traffic that unnecessarily slows down the traffic of other users) or for legal reasons in countries where we are obliged by the providers of block torrent traffic, among them United States, Russia, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong. "

If you stick to the recommended list, CyberGhost performs well, and overall it's a simple and straightforward way to anonymize your torrent activity.

Client configuration

CyberGhost does its best to make sure that the setup process is as easy as possible, and for the most part it is very successful.

By clicking on the trial link on the website, you quickly downloaded the small Windows installer. We agreed to the terms and conditions, entered our email address and password, and after clicking the usual 'please confirm your address' link in a follow-up email, that was it. We were ready to go with no payment or other details required.

It's pretty much the same story with mobile apps. The CyberGhost site connects you to each app store, and you download and install the apps in the usual way.

If you need the OpenVPN configuration files to set up a router or other device, your life becomes much more complicated. While other VPN providers usually give you a bunch of standard .OVPN files to download, CyberGhost requires you to go through the following lengthy process: Log into your account; add a device profile; choose the features you need (ad blocking, data compression, malware protection, etc.); choose OpenVPN TCP or UDP; choose your target country; write down a personalized server name, user name and password; and download the .OVPN file, certificates and key files in a ZIP file.

If you are looking to configure multiple locations, you should also rename each .OVPN file to something suitable.

This approach has some advantages - it's secure and gives you a high level of control over how each connection works - but if you're just hoping to download 50 standard OpenVPN configuration files, be prepared for disappointment. There is a lot of configuration work to be done.

Windows Client

CyberGhost's Windows client opens with a clean and light interface: a simple console with connection status, a list of locations, and a Connect button.

Don't be fooled, though - there's a lot of functionality in a right panel that you can open when you need it. A location picker lists all servers, along with their distance and current load. You can filter this to show servers optimized for streaming or torrents, and a bookmarks system lets you easily create your own personalized list.

Right-clicking on the CyberGhost system tray icon also displays all available servers, with submenus for torrent, streaming, and your favorites. You can choose to pick, change, and close connections without ever worrying about the main client interface.

The options start with a Login Features panel, where you can enable privacy features, including blocking ads, trackers, and malicious websites. CyberGhost can automatically redirect HTTP connections to HTTPS for added security, and an additional data compression feature compresses images and "other stuff" to reduce traffic and improve performance.

While that sounds awesome, these extras aren't always worth much.

For example, when we turned on the ad blocker and went to a UK news site full of ads, our browser made 671 requests, downloaded 5MB of content, and took 43 seconds to fully load.

When we disabled CyberGhost's ad blocker and switched to uBlock Origin, the same page made 156 requests, transferred 469KB of data, and loaded in 3 seconds.

A Smart Rules panel is much more useful and gives you an unusual level of control over client operation. Most VPNs have an option to launch when Windows starts up, for example, but CyberGhost also allows you to connect to your favorite server and automatically launch a particular app, like your default browser in incognito mode.

There's even more flexibility in the Wi-Fi Protection Panel, where CyberGhost lets you decide exactly what happens when you connect to new networks. You can ask the client to automatically connect to the VPN if the network is not secure, for example; never log in if it is encrypted; perform custom actions for specific networks (always protect at home, never protect at work), or just ask yourself what to do.

The surprises continue everywhere you look. Application protection can connect you to a specific location when you open an app, for example. No need to remember to activate the VPN before using your torrent client - CyberGhost can do this automatically for you.

There is another handy key in the Exceptions feature, where you can create a list of websites that will not go through the tunnel. If a streaming site is only accessible to users in your country, add it to CyberGhost's exceptions and it will never be blocked no matter what VPN location you use.

If that sounds too complex and you're just looking for the basics of VPN, that's fine; it can all be safely ignored. You will never even see it, unless you are looking for it. But if you want to fine tune the service, optimize it according to your needs, CyberGhost gives you a mix of options and opportunities that you will rarely see elsewhere.

Elsewhere, the Settings area lets you choose your preferred protocol (just OpenVPN or IKEv2, L2TP support has been dropped), use random ports to connect (which could bypass some VPN blocks), and enable or disable a kill switch, IPV6 connections, and DNS leak protection.

Our tests showed that the kill switch worked very well. Whether we forcibly closed an OpenVPN or IKEv2 connection, or even killed the openvpn.exe process completely, the client detected it, raised the alarm (sometimes a bit slowly, but eventually), and reconnected automatically. , without ever exposing our real IP. It's a tough test, but CyberGhost passed it without difficulty.

Mobile app

CyberGhost's iOS app is much simpler than its desktop cousins, with far fewer features and a relatively basic interface.

The iOS app opens with little more than a Connect / Disconnect button, for example. By default, it connects to your nearest server, but you can also browse a list of locations. Tap a location to view charging information, including the number of logged in users, and you can save specific locations to a favorites list.

The settings are minimal - you can't even choose your protocol - but the app does a good job of helping you define how it should be used with particular networks.

When we first launched the app, for example, it showed the name of our nearest Wi-Fi network on the opening screen. This is unusual, but it's a great idea because it helps you see what you are using to log in. If you tap on the name, you can specify whether you want CyberGhost to automatically protect it in the future, or prompt you to decide each time. And the app can record the appropriate actions for any networks you regularly use, so it knows exactly what to do at home, at work, at the cafe, or at the library.

The Android app unfortunately doesn't show your current wireless network, but the feature list is longer, with plenty of desktop features included.

There's a favorites list for storing your most frequently viewed locations, for example, which is especially handy on a mobile device where it's less convenient to find items on a long list.

While there is no choice of protocol (it's OpenVPN only), you do get the ability of the desktop client to use a random port when connecting to the VPN, a simple trick that might help bypass the problem. VPN blocking.

Split tunneling is probably the highlight, letting you decide which apps use the VPN and which don't, with just a few clicks.

The app also includes a lot of login extras that you'll see with the desktop version - blocking ads and trackers, compressing data, and filtering URLs to keep you away from malicious websites.

Overall, CyberGhost's mobile VPN apps aren't bad, but they still lack some of the basic features you'll often see elsewhere (kill switch, a choice of protocol, and protocol settings), and there's plenty of room for improvement.

Support

Point your browser to the site CyberGhost support and it's hard not to be impressed with the weight of the articles. There are guides for Windows, iOS, Mac, Android, Linux, Kodi, consoles, and routers, as well as troubleshooting articles and various other FAQs.

However, when we took a closer look, we started to spot a lot of issues. These start with how the articles are organized. We would expect installation issues to have a section on their own, for example, but instead they're spread out and mixed up with other articles. You can search the articles for keywords, but that doesn't help much because the results don't seem to be sorted by usefulness.

The content of the articles is also often poor. We headed over to OFF to the 'Connection and speed issues' section of the troubleshooter and noticed that there wasn't a single guide offering generic acceleration tips (log in from a different network, connect to a different location, try a different protocol, restart your hardware - you know the drill.) Instead, we found unnecessary content like this: "If you are using UMTS cards for connecting to the internet, you normally install the software for that card as well. These programs can cause problems, while using CyberGhost VPN, surprisingly even after shutting down using the UMTS card. "

This is not an excerpt, we have not modified or left it out. This is the entire article. Previous CyberGhost users seem to share our point - the article says '0 out of 9 found this useful' - but CyberGhost either didn't notice or doesn't care.

Obsolete guides are a problem. We researched the keyword "OpenVPN" in the support knowledge base, and the top 10 results were all three years old.

Other articles included questionable advice. The very first practical suggestion for "What to do if CyberGhost seems to be slowing down your internet connection" is to change your MTU from 1500 to 1300. This is way too low and drastic at first and could easily slow down your no VPN connections too, but CyberGhost doesn't give you a clue, nor warn non-technical users to cancel the step if it doesn't work.

Some of these articles also seem to have been poorly translated from the original ("in everyday life a number of adversities influence the actual possible speed"). While they are generally understandable, this means that the content is not always as specific and clear as it should be.

You can also talk to a real, living human being, luckily, via email and live chat. CyberGhost does its best to hide chat support - you need to click a Help button at the bottom right, then enter a keyword to search the knowledgebase, before the Chat button appears - but we finally found it.

One click and a few minutes later a support agent answered our question. Although we chose a slightly technical topic on generating OpenVPN config files, he immediately understood what we needed and clearly laid out everything we needed to know.

So CyberGhost's support site may be dubious, but that's not the end of the story. If you are having any issues, chances are the live chat support will point you in the right direction quickly.

Final verdict

CyberGhost is a capable VPN service with a highly configurable, feature-rich but still easy to use. Mobile clients are a lot more mainstream, but there's still a lot to like here, from unblocking Netflix and iPlayer to the three-year low prices and useful live chat support.
