Unlike many Windows VPN apps, TunnelBear includes a minimized mode. This is more functional than the system tray shortcut, but less graphical than the full app.

TunnelBear doesn't have many locations to choose from, but a location search box would be an excellent addition - as would a list of servers with some basic information like load and ping time. NordVPN and others provide detailed information on specific servers. This can be helpful when you need a connection in a specific location.

The TunnelBear app includes some advanced features such as: B. Trusted Networks, which is basically a whitelist of Wi-Fi networks that you trust. Another important feature is the alertness mode. This prevents data from slipping through your internet connection during the seconds it takes the TunnelBear to reconnect should you disconnect. The GhostBear feature aims to bypass VPN blocking by disguising the VPN traffic as normal HTTPS traffic. A representative from TunnelBear told me that the company recommends that users only turn on GhostBear if absolutely necessary required can reduce performance. It's an impressive proposition, but not unique. Many other companies offer similar custom tools to bypass censorship.

TunnelBear does not offer split tunneling in its Windows app, with which you can specify which apps send data traffic over the VPN tunnel and which data traffic should be transmitted outdoors. This is useful for accessing LAN traffic and for keeping certain low risk activities like gaming or streaming video fast and not blocked by the VPN. ExpressVPN and a handful of other services offer this feature.

One thing your VPN shouldn't do is share your personal information. When I test VPNs, I check to see if my IP address is changing and my ISP's name is hidden, and I use the DNS leak test to see if any DNS information is leaking. TunnelBear passed all of these tests without any problems, but the possible other servers could be misconfigured.

TunnelBear and Netflix

While no one can tell you are a dog (or a bear) online, streaming companies like Netflix can tell where you live and block you if they fake your location. This is because organizations often need to consider geographic restrictions on the content they serve. Unfortunately, when I tried to stream a movie from Netflix while connected to an TunnelBear VPN server, I was blocked. That was true when I tested the service, but your mileage may vary - as always happens when you're trying to use a VPN with Netflix.

Instead, the company launched a standalone browser plug-in called Blocker. This retains TunnelBear's trademark bear and charm and is surprisingly polished for a Chrome plugin.
